In developing a communications plan for a nonprofit organization using technology, students must have a comprehensive understanding of both the technology and its use in the human services field. Incorporating aspects of Bloom’s Taxonomy allows educators to focus on and promote the mastering of cognitive skills necessary for learning (Nurmatova & Altun, 2023). When evaluating students for the learning objective in this assignment, I believe it is most important for them to demonstrate their ability to evaluate the various technological tools that can be used to enhance communication and determine which tools would be most effective to use and why. These skills are evident in the creating stage of Bloom’s Taxonomy model, as described by Shabatura (2013). Student learning at this stage incorporates all the previous stages and requires the student to understand, apply, analyze, and evaluate the subject matter. When producing work at this level, students show mastery of the material and are adequately prepared to utilize their knowledge in a practical, professional setting.

The application of SMART goals and creation of a timeline as part of the communications plan required for the assignment allows the students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the organization’s communication needs. In this section, students are expected to analyze components of their plan and determine how those components impact their purpose and goals. Using Bloom’s Taxonomy, these skills are apparent in the applying and analyzing levels, which involve using procedures for implementation and showing how each part of the plan is related to the overall purpose of the communications goal (Shabatura, 2013). Generating SMART goals and timelines involves critical thinking and the consideration of multiple factors that may impact the execution of the plan.

The point breakdown I selected for this rubric reflects the importance of the assignment’s components as I have described above. I assigned more weight to the development of the plan and the SMART goals and timeline because I feel those tasks require the highest level of cognitive and analytical skills. I assigned less points to the explanation of technology tools because this process is already an element of the initial plan as well as the subsequent specific SMART goals. I also assigned less points to the APA formatting section of the rubric because I believe the skills required to select appropriate tools, create the communications plan, and determine what steps to take and when are more important to assess. Although I am adamant about academic integrity and the proper use of citations and inclusion of references, I want to prevent students from feeling discouraged by receiving a lower score simply because of formatting issues.
